Day Two was the longest scheduled ride of this year's RAGBRAI - 79.7 miles. Traditionally, there is an extra loop on the longest day that pushes the total daily miles over 100, and Day Two was the day!
I was challenged to ride this optional loop, named the Karras loop, after one of the founders of RAGBRAI. If I could successfully complete the ride, I would raise over $300 for ApparentPlan!
At the time I made the decision to go, I was feeling pretty good. But the headwinds took their toll by the end of the ride. It took me about 11 hours total to complete the day with all the stops I needed to take. Thanks to my younger brother, Tom, for riding with me with encouraging words AND for letting me draft in the brutal headwinds.
The highlight for me was getting my picture taken with John Karras, the founder for whom the extra loop was named. I told him that I got to ride with him, Donald Kaul and their wives back in 1975 on RAGBRAI III.
