It would take a novel to touch on all of the fascinating information he spoke about, but here are the three key take-aways Dr. Lindsey wanted everyone to remember:
1. Our bodies see gluten as a foreign object.
Our bodies are not equipped to digest modern wheat products. The gluten we are eating now is not the gluten our ancestors ate, nor is it what our bodies were designed to digest. When we eat gluten, our bodies see the compound as a foreign object and don't how to process it. As a result, a whole host of health problems can occur including all types of inflammation, thyroid problems, and gut problems, just to name a few.
2. Eat breakfast that includes protein to fuel your body and brain.
If we eat a breakfast full of sugar and carbohydrates (which are complex sugars), we are setting our day up for failure. When we eat protein in the morning we optimize our brain's ability to send messages to the rest of our body because it is getting the fuel necessary to do so. Also, protein gives your body the fuel necessary to keep going throughout the day. This contrasts with sugars and carbohydrates which initially give you a boost but then cause a crash shortly after. In addition, sugars and carbs raise insulin levels in the body and store whatever is in excess as fat.
3. Gut health is essential.
Did you know that 80% of the immune system is in the gut? Did you also know that 90% of serotonin (the neurotransmitter in your brain that makes you happy) is produced in gut? It is essential to have a healthy gut in order for our bodies to function properly and absorb the nutrients our bodies need. Dr. Lindsey spoke about the deep connection that exists between the gut and the brain.
Dr. Lindsey's entire talk emphasized the importance of good nutrition to prevent disease. One thing I thought was interesting was when he stated that most chronic diseases are caused by deficiencies and that none of us have a drug deficiency. For instance, if someone has depression, they don't have a “Prozac deficiency.” Instead, they may have a nutrient deficiency that is causing a decrease in serotonin production or their inflammation is getting so bad that it's getting in the way of their body's natural processes. This theory applies to all chronic diseases - there are no prescription drug deficiencies, simply nutrient deficiencies. But, here's the best part. We all have the ability to make a choice to find out what deficiencies we might have and what else is going on in our bodies. Armed with this knowledge, we can take steps towards fixing our deficiencies and feeling better!
