Exercise for Life

Team START: Bob, Carla, Tom and Tracy

As START’s team of riders take part in the epic 500-mile RAGBRAI (Register‘s Great Bicycle Race Across Iowa), they exhibit an extraordinary commitment to supporting START’s mission and a dedication to a healthy lifestyle.

Learn more about RAGBRAI and support the START team with a donation that will help seniors and caregivers in need. You can follow their ride through updates and photos on START’s RAGBRAI page.

Participating in RAGBRAI highlights an important part of aging well – physical activity. Silver Sneakers includes cycling in their list of 9 Best Exercises for Seniors, highlighting its ability to increase leg strength without exacerbating conditions like osteoporosis or joint issues.

Not sure cycling is the activity for you? START Board Member and geriatrician, George Schoephoerster, M.D., notes that incorporating physical activity into your daily routine as an older adult does not have to be a one size fits all approach.

“What’s important is that you find an activity that suits your fitness level, that you enjoy, and that you can be consistent with,” Schoephoerster says. “Whether that be cycling, walking, strength training – or ideally, a combination of activities.”

According to the National Council on Aging, there are a myriad of physical benefits to exercise as we age, including preventing bone loss and boosting immunity. Exercise also boosts emotional and mental wellbeing.

“Confidence, social connection and energy are all important aspects of aging well, which can be positively impacted by physical activity,” Schoephoerster adds. Be sure to consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.”

Please donate to support the START RAGBRAI cycling team and seniors and caregivers in crisis.
