Say that again?

As an older adult, I find myself avoiding loud restaurants. Yes, background noise is making it harder for me to hear conversations. How about you?

Now you can check your hearing by taking a three-minute hearing test online. All you need are ear buds or headphones. It was easy and informative.

Hearing loss is more than an inconvenience. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that older adults with greater severity of hearing loss were more likely to have dementia. But the likelihood of dementia was lower among hearing aid users compared to non-users.

You may have a hearing problem and not realize it. According to the National Insititute on Aging, you should see a doctor if you:

  • Have trouble understanding what people are saying over the telephone

  • Find it hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking

  • Often ask people to repeat what they are saying

  • Have a problem understanding speech because of background noise

  • Think that others seem to mumble

  • Can’t understand what’s being said when children and people with higher pitched voices speak to you.

I would love to hear your thoughts about aging and hearing loss. What’s on your mind? You can reach me at tracy@STARTseniorsolutions.org or call 952-215-7052.
